To Sportsplex Participants;
This notice provides clarification on recent stories that were circulating about the Greensboro Sportsplex. During the City's budget presentations information about closing the Sportsplex to daily City operations are being reviewed. However, what’s important to note, is that the City will continue to operate the facility for special events and tournaments, which involve outside contractors and vendors.
Under this scenario, the Sportsplex would not be open for drop-in or some Parks and Recreation programs. The City is also continuing to explore privatizing the facility.
(This letter explains the beginnings of the Sportsplex Volleyball Club
prior to our first 2008-09 season.)
Dear Parent and/or Area Volleyball Coach,
Piedmont Triad Volleyball Club has been a staple of our community for a number of years now and we have had hundreds of men, women, and youth participate in our travel volleyball programs. Over the past couple of years, you have seen the adult division disbanded with changes from the Carolina Region that no longer made adult clubs viable; you have noted the combination of the Triad Volleyball Club and the Piedmont Volleyball Club into the Piedmont Triad Volleyball Club; and you have noted the addition of an elite national program which has become known as the Piedmont Volleyball Club. These changes have brought about notoriety for our region with numerous successes including teams winning national qualifier tournaments in Colorado and Georgia within the last two years.
While many of the changes have been good ones, the changes have also brought about challenges that have been hard to manage. This letter comes to announce new and exciting changes! As Chuck McCracken begins a new chapter in his life moving on to a new challenge, the Greensboro Sportsplex will be stepping in to manage what has been known as the Piedmont Triad Volleyball Club Regional Teams (Greensboro), based out of the Sportsplex. With this change, we have determined it is in the best interest of the area athletes to begin a new volleyball club, which will be known as the Sportsplex Volleyball Club. This club will oversee all volleyball activities at the Sportsplex including regional and travel volleyball teams, developmental programs, skills clinics, summer camps, adult leagues, and a new travel program where we will be offering a number of trips centered on volleyball events for club members.
Our regional program will become known as Team Plex, with teams competing regionally in the 12 & Under, 13 & Under, 14 & Under, 15 & Under, 16 & Under, 17 & Under, 18 & Under divisions in the Carolina Region of the USAV. We assume this decision will not impact the Piedmont Triad Volleyball Club in Winston-Salem; the national teams of Piedmont Volleyball Club, directed by Blaine Tendler, will be a division of the Sportsplex Volleyball Club.
As we look into the future, we want to take what Chuck McCracken has grown into a viable volleyball club, and expand it. As a volunteer-run club, there were a number of frustrations that we know can be addressed with this new arrangement. We understand that it has been hard for parents to get in touch with anyone this year, leaving you frustrated and wondering if anyone cares about your concerns. The Sportsplex feels that by stepping in and creating a new club, parents will now have a place they can call and get in touch with someone. Our facility is staffed such that we should be able to elevate the level of customer service offered to club members relieving some of the frustrations experienced in recent years. We are in the business of sports management, and we do that every day. Unlike volunteers who have to make a living doing something else, we will be here every day administering the Sportsplex Volleyball Club. It is in our best interest to provide excellent customer service as we understand that all of our volleyball programs will now feed off of one another.
With this in mind, the Sportsplex Volleyball Club will field as many regional program teams as we have qualified coaches. It will be our goal to recruit coaches who want to work with your athletes, teaching them proper and uniform volleyball techniques across all age groups. Coaching clinics are already in the works so that these techniques can be implemented on the first day of practice for the 2008-2009 volleyball season. The goal of club volleyball is to teach good training so that skills can improve, and that is what you will receive at Sportsplex Volleyball Club—sound, fundamental training. We will expect “Excellence in Everything” from our parents and student-athletes; excellence in school, during training, at tournaments, and in all social settings. To this end, we are developing a Code of Conduct that we expect all program participants to embrace.
Trevor Hewitt will oversee the operation of the Sportsplex Volleyball Club’s regional side, while Blaine Tendler will work with Sportsplex Volleyball Club directing its national team program, Piedmont Volleyball Club.
Sportsplex Volleyball Club represents a fresh approach on the club volleyball scene in the Greater Greensboro Area. We guarantee that we will do everything we can to make this experience bigger and better as we move forward.
